Bulgarian chess grandmaster Kiril Georgiev is attempting to break the simultaneous chess world record set by Hungarian-American grandmaster Susan Polgar in 2005. Georgiev will be playing 450 simultaneously in the Expo center in Sophia, Bulgaria, about the same time and place his compatriot Veselin Topalov will be facing American Gata Kamsky for the World Chess Championship candidates match.

In order to break the current world record, Kiril Georgiev is required to win at least 360 of all simultaneous chess games (80%) played against a group of 450 players of all ages who were drawn in a pool out of 600 names. The current Guinness world record holder, previous Women's World Chess Champion Susan Polgar, won 309 of the 326 games (94%) she played at the 2005 Palm Beach simultaneous chess exhibition, and loss only in 3 of them.

Susan Polgar had broke four world records during the 16.5 hours of simultaneous chess spectacle in 2005 including the largest number of simultaneous chess games, the most consecutive
chess games, the highest number of games won and highest percentage of wins. Polgar, who walked a more than 15 km during the series of games, wished Georgiev the best of all luck, and advised him to wear comfortable shoes.
