May 25, 2009

Rybka is the winner of the World Computer Chess Championship held for the 17th year in Pamplona, Spain, on May 11-17, 2009. It is the third consecutive championship for the American chess playing program, which scored 8.0 points out of 9 games. The second place was shared between German chess computer Shredder, Israeli Junior, and Belgian Deep Sjeng, scoring 6.5 points each. British veteran and last year's runner up Hiarcs, has finished third with 6.0 points. The 2009 World Computer Chess Championship results list was closed with debutant Joker of the Netherlands with 0.5 total points.

The 17th World Computer Chess Championship, took place during the 12th Advances in Computer Games Conference at the Palacio Del Condestable in Pamplona, Spain, has strengthened Rybka's position as the world's strongest chess computer. Developed by American-Czech international master Vasik Rajlich, Rybka grabbed three gold medals, championing the WCCC main event, the world blitz chess championship and the chess computer Olympiad.

This year, the International Computer Games Association introduced a new, controversial rule for the World Computer Chess Championship, restricting the chess computer's hardware to maximum of eight logical cores available during play, single motherboard and no more than four sockets, except for the 14th Computer Olympiad, played with no hardware limit. According to the 8 core rule's objectors, it limits the participation to expensive equipment and at the same time blocks improvised chess machines with standard component from taking part.
