Aronian wins 18th Amber Chess Tournament

April, 2009

Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian has won the 18th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament held on March 14-26, 2009 in Nice, France. Aronian, who is also the winner of last year's Amber chess tournament, has won this year's event by a ½ point advantage, gained by a draw against Veselin Topalov in a dramatic blindfold chess game. The second place was shared by current World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand and his predecessor Vladimir Kramnik, who were followed by Magnus Carlsen at number 3.

Amber Chess Tournament, organized by the Monaco based Association Max Euwe has ended last week with the second successive victory of Levon Aronian. Starting on March 14, and consisting of eleven rounds with two daily sessions of rapid chess (25 min. a player + 10 sec. increments) and two daily sessions of blindfold chess (25'+10"), the chess tournament featured today's highest ranked chess players and a total prize pool of €216,000, marking it as the most important event in Amber Tournament 18 years of existence.

Blindfold chess leading players were Aronian, Kramnik and Carlsen with 7 points each, while the top of the rapid chess was ruled by Aronian, Anand and Gata Kamsky, with 7 points each as well. Chinese grandmaster Wang Yue, who was assigned to play rapid chess against Anand, who is regarded as the one of the fastest chess players in the world, and lost 1½-½, has reached the bottom of the Amber Chess Tournament ranking list with 7.5 points
